Jimmy D's Boilermakers Build

Today I started the Boilermakers kit and this afternoon I got the platform templates and stair stringer in the mail from Jimmy. Perfect timing!

The box contains quite a few, okay alot of parts and pieces and I found them to be well packed. All the building walls, metal detail parts, plastic windows and doors and other details are all individually wrapped. This looks like a wonderful kit and has many many possibilities for changing the building around. It's also possible to have three separate building. However, for this build, I'll build it per the instructions. The following five pictures are what I found when the box contents were laid out!

Hi Gang;
Just ordered one for myself. It will be #2 for me. I built one of the originals back in the day when it came out. I think it was the 3rd kit i ever put together. Last i saw it 14 years ago it was on the Plant city, florida clubs' layout in an old school building. I wonder if it and they are still there?

I'll end up building two as well. This one is for Jimmy and when finished I'll ship the completed model back to him. I have a spot on my layout for the one I build.

I've never been to the Plant City layout so I'm not sure it's still there or not. Maybe some other forum members can let us know.

Before Jimmy starts shipping this kit, he needed to know if everything fit. With this in mind, here is what I did.

I removed the wall sections from each bag and measured the walls. I started with the large center building first. The walls measured 4 27/32" in length or width as you will. These were correct! Note, my green ink is on the back side of each section.

The gabled or "A" frame end meausred 3 13/16" side. These were correct. The wall heights were all even with each other.

I next took the doors and windows and fit them into the window and door openings. This is where I found some size/opening issues. So, Jimmy here is where the changes need to be made. Again, staying with the large center building here is what I found. On the two side walls, the opening for the freight doors is 1/32 short. The door opening needs to be cut a 1/32 inch higher on the freight door opening. This applies to each freight door on each wall section of the center building. You can see the freight door larger than the opening in this photo.

Also, on the side wall with the tall single door and the three windows above the door, the door opening on this section is is 1/32" shorter than the door. You can see the full wall section in jdb8.jpg above. The next photo shows this door 1/32 hanging out. This door opening needs to be cut 1/32" higher.

Still staying with the large center building, I'll move to the gabled end walls. Each end has a small attic window at the top. The window fit into one opening and fell through the other one. There is a slight 1/32" difference in the window openings. Refer to the photo below!

I next moved to the building on the left or the building with the board and batton walls. I measured the width on each side wall and found one to be 2 3/8" or 2 12/32" wide. I found the other side wall to be 2 11/32" wide. So, the side board and batton wall with the single small window is 1/32" wider than the other.

Note, in the above photo, the "SAND HERE" is a personal note for me to carefully sand the 1/32" off this wall section.

The two end walls sections of the board and batton building are even.
