Weathering: Light to Dark or Dark to Light?

Weathering: Light to Dark or Dark to Light?

Postby jaysonol » Wed Aug 22, 2012 4:16 pm

Not sure why I am having such a hard remembering the rule of thumb, can someone help me?

When using weathering chalks, powders on structures - Do you start with the darkest powders first, then build up the layers with the lighter ones, or is it the otehr way around?

You can blend them either way. Practice on some scrap. I like pastel chalks that don't have adhesives in them because they are much more forgiving if you put too much on.

Good advice from Runner! It's all a matter of personal preference and application methods.
I too, use pastel chalks with no adhesive (I mainly use the landscape box of 24 colors from Dick Blick).

Their earth-tones (set of 12) is another good choice.

Easy to use and correct, plus they are fairly inexpensive!
Practice is the key word here.

I tend to work both ways at once, I ussualy start out light and gradually darken but I usually make things a bit too dark and have to add more light colors.

If it's a dark roof, for instance, I start with lighter colors. I often have to go back and forth to get to the end point, however.
